Impression cytology of conjunctival melanosis and melanoma.

چکیده
Impression cytology using cellulose acetate paper has been used in various ocular surface disorders as a simple non-invasive diagnostic test. To assess its value in differentiating melanocytic tumours, 24 patients with a range of pigmented lesions of the conjunctiva were examined using this technique. Cytological and histological diagnoses were compared in 23 cases. In 73% of cases impression cytology predicted the histological diagnosis by detection of superficial atypical melanocytes and their proportion relative to benign epithelial cells. This pilot study shows impression cytology to be a useful diagnostic aid in the differentiation of pigmented tumours of the bulbar conjunctiva.

Amelanotic corneally displaced malignant conjunctival melanoma: a case report evaluated with impression cytology.
Here we describe the case of a 65-year-old Caucasian female who presented with an amelanotic malignant conjunctival melanoma and highlight the clinical and pathological features of this rare entity that displayed exclusive corneal invasive growth without evidence of conjunctival tumors other than primary acquired melanosis. Impression cytology aided in the initial diagnosis. The patient underwe...
متن کاملImpression Cytology in a Series of Clinically Diagnosed Ocular Surface Melanocytic Lesions
PURPOSE To report impression cytology (IC) results of clinically diagnosed ocular surface melanocytic lesions. METHODS Ten patients with a clinical diagnosis of an ocular surface melanocytic lesion underwent IC using cellulose acetate strips and Periodic acid Schiff-Papanicolaou staining. Excisional biopsy of lesions was performed in case of observing atypical cells on IC or at the patient's ...
متن کاملConjunctival melanoma and melanosis: a reappraisal of terminology, classification and staging.
This paper aims to stimulate debate on the terminology, classification, grading and staging of conjunctival melanosis and melanoma. We audited our results with 76 invasive conjunctival melanomas. Staging according to the sixth edition of the Tumour Node Metastasis (TNM) system did not correlate well with tumour extent and outcome. Approximately 50% of invasive melanomas were associated with 'pr...
متن کاملProgression of conjunctival primary acquired melanosis (PAM) to widely spreaded malignant melanoma.
Primary acquired melanosis (PAM) is an acquired pigmentation of the conjunctival epithelium, a preinvasive pigmented lesion. When it is associated with cellular atypia it can lead to the developement of melanoma. We report a case report of malignant melanoma of the conjuntiva, which arrised from the conjuntival PAM. The disease was too extensive for ocular conservation, therefore exenteration w...
متن کاملCell growth and p53 expression in primary acquired melanosis and conjunctival melanoma.
AIMS To evaluate cell growth and the pattern of p53 suppressor gene expression in atypical primary acquired melanosis (PAM) and in recurrent conjunctival melanoma. METHODS Eighteen specimens of PAM with atypia and 24 specimens, comprising early and late lesions, from 12 patients with conjunctival melanoma were stained for the proliferating cell nuclear antigen using the PC10 antibody, and for...
